Life is…

What should life look like?
There is no right or wrong answer
But when you are consumed by a routine
It can be difficult to see the reason behind the push and pull

One day your head is low
Another day, your teeth are drawn from cheek to cheek
One moment your heart is full of joy
Another, you feel weak

What should we accept in life?
What are things you can’t change?
What are things you should change?

As my tear duct grows heavy
I am bound to see the reason that life is still golden
No place is perfect

But you need to feel like you are home
Sometimes you are pulled in ten different directions
Trying to find where you belong
Sometimes you are shape-shifting to fit a role
Forgetting who you are

What should life look like?
There will always be sunshine after rain
There will be beauty from your pain
Be happy they say
But what does happiness look like?

As a rose carries petals
I am slowly peeling parts of myself
That no longer serve me
Sometimes roots are too deep

And the more you dig
Your back grows tired of the weight you have carried

What does joy look like?
Not the fake selfies
Not the designer clothes
Not the forced laughter
Not leaning your shoulder pretending you are interested
To agree to everything

What does happiness look like?
Sometimes it is not the burden that wears us down
It is how we carry it
It is trying to do it all on our own
It is fixing something that’s not broken
It is only seeing ourselves as broken
It is tearing pieces of ourselves that we feel as lame

Life is learning to be both a survivor and an alchemist
Life is learning to make the most of experiences and relationships
Life is practising gratitude
Life is feeling the fear and doing it anyways
Life is starting before you are ready
Life is opportunity in the midst of chaos

Life is like an ocean
With every wave may come turbulence
But in due season, you can see beauty in the waters
