We all hope that people will show unconditional love, through the bad and the good times. The question you should ask is, do you show unconditional love to yourself? Are you kind to yourself even in bad times? Do you accept yourself with the rejections, disappointments and mistakes? Do you say, “this too shall pass”? And “these things don’t define me”?
Often we don’t know that we teach people how to treat us. If we don’t fully love ourselves, then who else will?
It is human nature to run away from pain, to be isolated when things go unplanned. And we see that in both healthy individuals and those dealing with mental health issues. Isolation goes hand in hand with how you feel. And there’s nothing wrong with not being O.K.
Self-awareness is like a muscle, the more you use it, the more it will get stronger. My suggestion is moving on today, in times of anger, pain, depression, frustration, feeling low, take a journal or any sheet and put down your thoughts on paper. You can also meditate, have a silent time where you are away from your phone, computer, and other distractions. Build a sense that you are fully present in that moment. Remember your thoughts are not your own, you only choose which of them you act upon. Additionally, reach out to the people around you. If preferred, speak to a professional, someone that can genuinely listen to you, or a coach/mentor.
So find courage today and learn to see that you are not your past, you are not your mistakes, you are not your downfalls, and you are not your shortcomings. It is only an expression of life. And as long as there is air passing through your lungs, you will experience contrast, you will find that peace and chaos coexist.
