The next morning felt sudden. There was a sensation of absence, as I open my eyes and stared at the figure in front of me. Frank had woken up earlier and now holds a breakfast sandwich with orange juice.

“Morning my angel. How was your night?” Frank said as he placed the breakfast on the table beside me.

“It was alright. I am rested and ready for the day. I could only imagine you being able to wake up so early. You were a hot mess. Please sit.” I tapped lightly on the side of the bed. I looked into his eyes like any lover would. Something wasn’t right. There was a cloud of mischief hovering above his head. I was determined to get it out.

“What’s the matter? You look worried?”

“Frank look me in the eyes and tell me the truth. What happened yesterday? I was terrified.”

“I was in a fight at the bar. I was badly beaten. I came out of it alive.”

“You have scratches on your hands. The wounds are too deep. What did you do to get this sort of treatment?”

“Listen. I was drunk. It was a bunch of drunk men with egos fighting. I didn’t want to appear as a coward. I let those punks get what he deserved.”

“What was the fight about? Was this personal? Who is out to get you?”

“Relax. No one is after me. It was a bunch of drunk guys that had nothing better to do. Just eat before the food gets cold.”

“I lost my appetite. I’ll just pack lunch. I wished you had seen yourself last night. Did you even get to sleep?”

He held my hands and placed them on his lap. He pushed my hair to the right side of my face so that he could clearly see me. “I am sorry for showing up like that. I promise to be careful next time. Now please go get ready for work.”

The doorbell rang shortly after, there was a gentleman behind the curtains with a purple cap and a golf shirt. He also had brown shorts. He was looking down as if he was shy or if he didn’t want to reveal himself. Frank assured me that he would take care of it. It was close to my work time and I had to get ready.

Frank opened the door to one of his friends from the golf club, Martin. His head carried sweat and his voice was shaking as he spoke.

“How did you find me?” Asked Frank

“You always talked about your girlfriend. How is she holding up? Did you tell her?”

“Of course not. She would freak out. So why are you here?”

“It is up to you to choose what you tell her. Anyways, here are the keys to the van. But the car was reported stolen this morning. If the cops find any information about the car, I am heading to Europe. Remember, I do not know you. From now on, we will not contact each other directly. Enjoy the rest of the day.”

“Wait. Why are you in a hurry? Come in and grab a cup of coffee?”

“Come in to do what? Every time I get with you, there is always some sort of bad news. I am so unsure of what my life will amount to after yesterday. I’ll take my leave now.”

“If you insist. Take care of yourself, buddy.”

As the warm water kissed my skin. I felt a sensation of rebirth. The hot steam drew clouds on the glasses. I carried water in my hair. I carried weight on my head. I knew that my cleansing started from the top. Rebirth started from my thoughts.
